VMware introduces vcloud
VMware Virtual Appliance Marketplace (VAM) Accelerates Cloud Adoption with New Capabilities and New vCloud Partner Offerings
PALO ALTO, Calif., Apr.21, 2009 - VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization solutions from the desktop to the datacenter, today announced how its industry-leading destination site for virtual appliances, the VMware VAM, has become an even more dynamic environment enabling customers to trial, consume and deploy appliances to the cloud. Now featuring more than 1,000 appliances and hundreds of service providers, including many leading cloud providers, and new features including a beta version of the new apps-on-demand functionality, and the vCloud Free Trials, VMware VAM connects ISVs and cloud service providers to deliver applications in the cloud to end-users.
"VMware has created a rich marketplace that we believe revolutionizes the way software is delivered and deployed," said Dan Chu, vice president, emerging products and markets. "VMware VAM extends a customer's choice, by simplifying the way they find, evaluate and deploy applications in a cloud environment, on or off premise."
A New Way to Find and Deploy Software
Virtual appliances are pre-built software solutions composed of one or more virtual machines that are packaged, maintained, updated and managed as a unit. Virtual appliances provide an easy-to-use, more secure software delivery system that can be moved among clouds. As one of the original authors of the Open Virtualization Format (OVF) standard, and with its commitment to open interoperability between cloud services, VMware works to ensure the consistent mobility, provisioning, management and service assurance of applications running in internal and external clouds. The VMware VAM, launched in 2006, has been the go-to location for finding pre-built, ready-to-run virtual appliances that could be run on multiple virtualization platforms. Today, VMware VAM provides a wide variety of appliances - from production-ready appliances that you can buy to free open source applications - and a library of information on them, including reviews, whitepapers, and blog postings.
[Partner Quote:] "As a participant in the VAM, the OVF and virtual appliance model simplifies our ability to deliver applications that work in cloud environments as well as increase our exposure to new customers, said [company spokesperson].

Software on Demand
Software vendors have been using VMware VAM as a revolutionary way to build and market their software. VMware VAM includes tools to help ISVs validate, publish and market their appliances. The newest functionality of the VAM offers users an application on demand. The app-on-demand feature is currently in beta and will feature various virtual appliances that are already deployed, and can be started with a simple login.
App on demand will significantly simplify the evaluation of an application for users, by allowing them to select an application, select a cloud provider, and deploy the application in the cloud, without incurring hardware and set up costs. For the ISV, this solution shortens the sales cycle by delivering a trial without a complicated proof of concept, and introduces customers to services delivered in the cloud.
[Partner Quote:] "The VAM is a logical step for ISVs to get their applications deployed into a format that enables mobility between clouds," said [company spokesperson]. "As a vCloud provider we want to see more applications available on demand to best serve the needs of our customers and the market.
vCloud Partner Community
vCloud providers Terremark, Tata, Hosting.com and iTricity are offering a limited time free trial to further simplify the experience with virtual appliances in the cloud. These partners will not only accept virtual appliances in the free trial, but are allowing users to experience virtual cloud capacity for any of their application needs. With over 400 vCloud service providers, users can deploy the appliances or applications needed to the cloud of their choice.
"As a leading global vCloud service provider, we feel the VMware VAM offers users a simple way to deploy new applications to any of our cloud locations, said [company spokesperson]. The free trial offer will allow users to explore the use cases and simplicity of accessing VMware infrastructure in the cloud."
